btmp、wtmp、utmpの「tmp」って何？

【Linux】btmp、wtmp、utmpの中身を確認する方法で紹介したbtmp、wtmp、utmpですが、btmp、wtmp、utmpの先頭文字の「b」「w」「u」って何？では、それぞれの頭文字「b」「w」「u」について説明しました。

それでは、共通についている「tmp」が何を表すかご存知でしょうか？

これは言葉通り「temporary」を表しています。

では、なぜ「temporary」なのか。

tmp may be short for temporary (as in transient) since these files are, like log files, periodically rotated/truncated. The utmp and wtmp files also initially resided in /tmp when they were introduced in Version 3 AT&T Unix.

簡単にいうと、「昔のUnixではutmpやwtmpが/tmpに配置されていた」ということです。その名残りのようですね。
